Does anyone really know what Auld Lang Syne means?

First off, this doesn't have anything to do with the title of this post, but everyone should listen to the Winter Wonderland song by Harry Connick Jr. He has his daughter sing with him and it's so fun! She has the cutest voice.

Ok, now for the real topic. Who doesn't like Wikipedia? A couple of weeks ago I heard Auld Lang Syne on the radio and I decided I needed to know what it was about. I recognize the song but really had no idea what it was about or what Auld Lang Syne meant so I looked it up and this is what I learned: it was written by Robert Burns who is to my understanding a figure of national pride in Scotland. In the Scots language Auld Lang Syne literally means "old long since" but we would say something like "for old time's sake" or "long, long ago." The first few lines of the first verse are a question - "Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?" So it's like a reminiscing kind of song. Then I read a little further and as far as I can tell it's a drinking song. I was surprised by this and I laughed. I always thought it was just a nice kind of thinking about the New Year song. I hope I don't offend any Scottish people. I thought that was hilarious though. However if you go to wikipedia yourself and look up this article, scroll down to the chart that has Burns' original verse, the pronunciation guide and the English translation. I spent about 30 minutes saying it over and over and trying to perfect my Scottish accent. Haha!

As many of you know I'll be in Pennsylvania for Christmas so stay tuned for another excellent Christmas post!
