So here's some background information. Although as I'm thinking about it, it may not all be completely accurate. I don't know which are things Matt just said and which are actually what happened. Haha. Well, he'd been trying to get the ring for a few weeks or something and they were taking a really long time about it. One day, I called him a few hours after work and after trying to decide if he should tell me where he was, he just told me he'd been getting a ring. So that's when I knew it wouldn't be too too long until he proposed. I really didn't have any idea what he would do and he asked me a couple of times how I would want to be asked, but I said it was all him on this. I didn't really mind what he did, it would all be good. I think we'd both established that proposing at the temple would be cliché, I didn't really want it in front of like thousands of people or on TV and I didn't really see it being in Rexburg because there's nothing exciting here. But that was really all we were working with.
The next couple weeks went on and we would go to Idaho Falls occasionally, and he would constantly be reminding me how he could propose at any time. I would roll my eyes and say yah yah whatever or something. He enjoyed it.
One Monday he called and was irritated about something and he told me that the ring was supposed to be finished but it wasn't and he said it would probably be another week or two. Which was annoying. I was impatient. I admit it. But that night we went down to Idaho Falls to register and just hang out at Barnes and Noble and Best Buy. Of course he was still teasing me and we both knew he would get as close as he could to proposing and then not. Like starting to talk about us and getting married, get down on his knee then tell me he'd dropped something and sit back down. Something like that. He never did any thing quite that bad but he would start talking about us or get quiet and look at me and then I would know what he was doing and tell him he was a punk.
So Monday we went down to Idaho Falls, Tuesday I think we went down again to register because it was kinda fun going through Bed, Bath and Beyond scanning stuff and we finished that off. Thursday came around and he called me around 12:30 on his lunch break. I asked him if he was just going to lunch and he said he'd left a few minutes ago and that he was having a bad day and did I want to go to Idaho Falls again that night. I said sure because I always like getting out. However the rest of that day I was suspicious. Why wouldn't he go to lunch til 12:30? Why would he suggest going to Idaho Falls for the third time that week especially since we'd finished registering at Bed, Bath and Beyond? I reasoned that he totally had time to go pick up my ring then call me. So the rest of the day I was going back and forth between being sure he would propose and being sad that I was getting my hopes up. So I got home from work and decided to spruce myself up a little on the off chance that he would propose. I changed into a nicer shirt, put a little mascara on, brushed my teeth and re-did my hair. Matt came over and he was wearing his t-shirt and shorts so that immediately deflated me a little, but we left soon after that and were driving up the road and instead of going straight (toward the highway) he turned and went to the temple. I thought to myself, Ok something is definitely up; even if he just teases me again, something is going to happen. So we got out of the car and just walked around the grounds and calmly talked about where to take pictures, as if neither of us were thinking a thing about this very unusual circumstance. Eventually he said let's go sit on those benches, which we did and he had his hand by his pocket not fiddling or doing anything suspicious but I think because I was so hyper aware or something I knew he had the ring. He got up and I stood next to him. And of course I was the epitome of ease. He hugged me and started saying cute stuff and I could tell one of his arms was not hugging me and eventually he showed me the ring and asked if I would marry him.
Well, it's all downhill from there. I said yes. I told him he had to put the ring on my finger. Then we started talking about everything. He had gotten the ring at lunch and just made up that stuff about having a bad day. He said he was going to go to the temple and not do anything and wait till later when we went to Idaho Falls, but he didn't for two reasons: first, he couldn't wait that long and second he knew I wouldn't expect him to propose at the temple and just keep teasing me as long as he could. So we were both playing our little games.
Haha. I know this is long, but I didn't want to skimp. You can read this in a few sessions or sit down with some popcorn or something. Haha. But there you have it, my engagement story.
